GICLEE ~ THE ART FORM The term “giclee” (“zhee-clay”) comes from a French word meaning “a spraying of ink,” and describes a reproduction process. There is a much tinier dot pattern than in offset lithography which appears as a solid passage of pure ink, producing incredibly detailed prints for both the fine art and photographic markets. In essence, in the transformation of the original image to a giclee print, an entirely different piece of art is created from an original painting. With today’s innovations, a world of possibilities are available for artists including digital scanning and computer programs, which allow the artist to blend old and new technologies to stretch the boundaries of creativity. For example, in Lupine Solitaire I used this technology to blend and layer three separate watercolor paintings. I start with the highest quality scans of my watercolors; After refining the scan, making touchups and many artist proof test prints, I settle on the official giclee image (the “bon a tirer” or “good to print” version) and produce the image on fine art paper. Special archival-quality light-fast inks are used in a top quality ink jet printer. These inks, like the traditional non-fugitive watercolor pigments, will remain true for up to 50 years if kept out of the sun or bright light. The giclee process marks an elevation in printmaking methodology. Images can be produced onto various grounds including canvas or art-quality paper. The process also provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction. Giclee prints are now commonly found in museums, art galleries and private collections worldwide. Giclee prints are advantageous to artists who want to reproduce their art as needed. Once an image is perfected, prints can be made with minimal effort and reasonable cost, although the cost per print is higher than that of offset lithography. However, the prohibitive up-front cost of offset lithography is eliminated. Archived digital files will not deteriorate in quality as negatives and film do. Another tremendous advantage of giclee printing is that digital images can be reproduced to almost any size, giving the artist the ability to customize prints for a specific client. To the collector, giclee prints afford the opportunity to own high quality art images at a reasonable cost. My giclees, each one inspected and signed by me, are especially affordable since the prints are not numbered in limited editions. Sincerely, Teresa Ascone
